Negligence Knocks Down Historical Cistern

Source: The Hans India
The 4-century-old Char Su Ka Hauz or popularly known Gulzar Houz fountain is now a thing of the past. Reconstruction work undertaken to complete traffic works saw the demolition of the 400-year-old fountain. The remnants of the iconic fountain and its lotus-shaped basin built by the Qutub Shahis remain barricaded and covered under a green cloth. Heritage activists are appalled by this gross destruction of a historical structure by the local body.
Cistern of Four Cardinal Points: Char-Su-Ka-Hauz literally translates to ‘Cistern of the four cardinal points’. This iconic cistern was built 350 meters away from the four arch-type structures (kamaans) surrounding it. The historical structure was built as per the architectural layout drawn by Mir Momin Astarabadi, the first Prime Minister under Muhammad Quli Qutub Shahi’s reign. This cistern served as a source for the Qutub Shahi army to quench their thirst.
Derelict Historical Site: One of the engineers of the Quli Qutub Shah Urban Development Authority (QQSUDA) described the dilapidated condition of the structure. The structure was overgrown with algae and debris from the fountain made into the three-tier drain. Dense traffic still remains a challenge for the restoration of the defunct fountain. This structure, post-restoration, is said to be one of the welcoming points to Charminar.
