Reviving Charminar's Olden Charm

Charminar is all set for a new look. After decades of deliberation, the government has green-lit the Charminar Pedestrianisation Plan (CPP). The project aims to create a buffer zone around the monument to protect it from pollution and traffic congestion.

• The Pedestrianization of Charminar: The revised CPP plans revive the area around the iconic structure. To meet this objective, the government has proposed a traffic management plan to separate outer and inner ring roads, along with pedestrianization of four routes leading to the monument.

• Restoring The Streetscape: Conservationist architect Abha Narain Lambah hopes to restore the streetscape to its original look. The remodeled streetscape will feature arched kamans on the ground floor, uniform signage, and wooden louvered shutters to recreate the historic character of the area

Green Shoots for Sustainable Housing

Infusing a new aesthetic into the urban landscape, Bamboo House India is using recycled plastic waste and bamboo to build stunning houses. Co-founded by Prashant and Aruna Lingam in 2006, Bamboo House India has recycled over 15000 tons of plastic waste and built 500 homes over the last 7 years.

• A Tough Start: Initially, this unique idea had no takers. Prashant states they remained workless and accumulated a debt of Rs 60lakh by 2012. They got their first breakthrough in 2014 when a school principal approached them to build a bamboo structure on the penthouse. They haven’t looked back since.

• Sustainable Housing: Recycled plastic obtained from poly bags, plastic bottles, and other waste is used along with bamboo to create an urban, modern living experience. These long-lasting bamboo houses built in 30-45 days are equipped with all essential amenities.

Propelling Aviation Manufacturing

The Indo-France collaboration in aviation is taking off. Safran Aircraft Engines India Pvt Ltd, the Indian arm of Paris-based aerospace company Safran inked an agreement with GMR Hyderabad Aviation SEZ Ltd to build and operate an Engine MRO facility.

• Planes Stay Airborne: Safran Aircraft Engines India Pvt Ltd has leased 23.5 acres of land parcel within the GMR Aerospace and Industrial Park. Safran will build and operate engine maintenance, repair, and overhaul operations for LEAP turbofan engines. The new facility will occupy 36,500 sqm of built-up space in the SEZ.

• Scaling Up Opportunities: At the onset, the facility will have the capacity to service 100 engines per annum. Safran will scale up its operation to service 300 engines per year by 2035. This venture will provide employment to 1000 workers at peak operation capacity.

Drivers’ Complaints Go Astray

Hyderabad's Ola and Uber drivers are facing a tough time making ends meet. High operating costs, including hefty fuel expenses and vehicle maintenance, leave them with a meager monthly wage after paying commissions to the aggregators.

• Health Repercussions: Driving for more than 12 hours significantly impacts the body, with over 50% of drivers experiencing chronic back, leg, and joint pain, while half of the respondents suffer from time pressure-related ailments, including back pain.

• Platforms' Inadequate Support: The study exposed a lack of support from platforms like Uber and Ola for drivers. While they listened to customers, they ignored driver complaints. The absence of a human interface also left drivers dissatisfied with the responses received after raising complaints through the apps.
