The large-scale tree plantation program Telangana Ku Haritha Haram (TKHH) initiative started by the Telangana state government in 2015 has significantly increased the green cover of the city. The success of the program has seen Hyderabad listed twice among the ‘Tree Cities of the World’ by United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This has made Hyderabad an attractive destination.

  • Scenic Allure: The officials state the green cover added overtime on the central medians, junctions, avenue plantations, and vertical gardens on flyovers, and the development of parks added to the allure of the twin cities. Scenic stretches like the Gachibowli Stadium road, the University of Hyderabad road, and the HITEC City to Moosapet road today have become attractive locations to enjoy during long rides.

  • Great Care & Appreciation: The saplings planted during the 2019 Haritha Haram have now grown into big trees providing respite and shelter during the summer. Local resident welfare associations have appreciated the dedication shown to improve the green cover. The success of the Haritha Haram program has led to a 7.7% increase in the green cover of the state

Mahboob Chowk Market, also known as 'Murgi Chowk' near Charminar, will soon be demolished. A new complex, retaining the architectural design elements of the current structure, will replace it within two years at a cost of 29.5 crore.

  • Notable Tourist Attraction: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation aims to demolish the 130-year-old building this week, with videos of the demolition already circulating on social media since Tuesday. Arvind Kumar, the special chief secretary of the municipal administration and urban development department, addressed concerns by calling the current Murgi Chowk "uninhabitable." The new Murgi Chowk will maintain its architectural design and become a notable tourist attraction. Kumar assured that they followed the necessary procedures, including public notification.

  • Long-Standing: A significant part of Murgi Chowk, a local market, has been demolished using earth movers. The five-story structure, built in 1892 during the tenure of former Prime Minister Asman Jah, serves as a central hub for meat and poultry vendors. It features distinctive Turkish-Nizam architecture displayed in its clock tower and facade. The market is known for its long-standing small businesses, some operating for up to 70 years.

Monkeys On A Menace

Monkeys are running amok terrorizing the people of Hyderabad. The serious lack of capacity and a lackadaisical approach by the authorities have created a monkey menace. These monkeys are breaking into homes and shops and biting the residents. The pedestrians are not safe either. These monkeys entering the homes are destroying valuables and property.

  • Rise in Monkey Attacks: There has been a sporadic rise in the number of monkeys breaking into homes and attacking people. These simians walk into the kitchens, open the refrigerator, and eat the food stored. Also, they make it a point to destroy the leftovers. Staff at the Government Fever Hospital in Nallakunta state that monkeys are all over the city. The hospital receives at least two monkey-bite patients every month.

  • Long-Standing Menace: The areas of Nallakunta, Barkatpura, Habsiguda, and Rajendernagar are severely affected by the monkey menace. Children living in these localities are scared to play outside. Maids fear working in houses haunted by monkeys making life harder for residents. Despite several complaints, there has been no action to tackle the monkey menace.

The IT success story of Telangana has moved beyond the capital city of Hyderabad into the Tier-2 cities of the state. K T Rama Rao, the state minister for Information & Technology speaking on the sidelines of releasing the annual IT progress report, commented that the government will soon set up IT Towers in the Tier-2 cities of Warangal, Khammam, Karimnagar, and Mahabubnagar. This will expand the size of the IT industry in Telangana

  • Impressive Growth: The annual IT progress report highlighted the impressive growth of the IT sector in Telangana. Despite the pandemic, the IT sector in Telangana witnessed an impressive 31.44% growth in exports in the fiscal year 2022-2023. The cherry on the cake for Telangana as inferred by the report is that the state contributed 44% of the jobs in the IT sector in the country in 2023.

  • Second IT Hub: Recognising the pitfalls of only developing Hyderabad, the Telangana government has chosen Warangal to be the second IT hub of the state. Warangal has already seen investments from companies like Tech Mahindra, Genpact, and Cyient. The government is hoping the expansion of the IT sector will create 2500 IT jobs and provide indirect employment to 10,000 people.
