Keep Hyderbad Safe With GO 111

The Federal
With a stroke of the pen, the Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar lakes are in peril. The withdrawal of GO 111 has caused a hazardous environmental impact, urban development chaos, and potential water woes for Hyderabad.
Scope of GO 111: Applicable to 84 mandals and 7 villages, over 1.32 lakh acres, 200 sq km of land was declared a catchment area as per the GO. This prohibited construction and industrial activity around the area and farmers made use of the land for sustenance. The withdrawal seems to open up a pandoraโs box of environmental and social issues.
Making Hyderabad Flood Prone: Flood waters from the river upstream were diverted into the two water reservoirs of Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar. With concrete structures replacing the catchment area, the course of floods may change course and pose a massive risk to Hyderabad.
